Frequently Asked Questions for UniChem regarding Pfizer’s new
distribution arrangements
1. What is UniChem’s role in Pfizer’s new ‘direct to pharmacy’ distribution
model?
-
UniChem responded to a request from Pfizer to be involved in this new
distribution model. Following a tender process involving all national UK
wholesalers, UniChem was appointed as the sole distribution partner.
-
UniChem’s involvement in this model means that pharmacy is guaranteed a
supplier who understands their business and can maintain ease of ordering. With
over 60 years experience in pharmaceutical wholesale, industry-leading service
levels, and our roots firmly embedded in independent pharmacy, we are in an
excellent position to ensure that a full, national distribution model operates
effectively.
-
We believe that this model will bring better security to the supply chain.
Increased patient safety is at the heart of this move and we strongly believe
that this should be the industry’s paramount concern.
2. How is UniChem going to ensure that current service levels are maintained when
it is delivering to all UK pharmacists and dispensing doctors?
-
Our substantial investment plans mean that we are absolutely confident that
current service patterns will be maintained across the UK – with twice daily
deliveries maintained as the industry standard.
-
UniChem will not discriminate on service and will demonstrate to all customers
that its service is the best in the market.
3. As a sole distribution partner, how can UniChem guarantee continuity of supply
to the whole market at all times?
-
Pfizer carried out an intensive review of UniChem's operation, through an
independent audit, before announcing these new arrangements. During this
process, UniChem’s branch network and disaster recovery plans were closely
scrutinised by an independent, external consultancy and the result is that
Pfizer is 100% satisfied that we have the capability to maintain supply to all
UK pharmacies and dispensing doctors from March 2007.
-
We are totally confident in our ability to achieve continuity to supply to the
market at all times. We operate a large, multi-site operation, with full
national coverage and plentiful capacity. We have invested heavily in our
warehouse network in recent years to ensure that we have extra capacity in
place, as well as top of the range automation systems. This inter-connected
network ensures that we have extensive back up capabilities.
4. Who is responsible for pharmacists’ discount arrangements / terms on Pfizer
prescription medicines?
-
With effect from March 2007, Pfizer will deal directly with customers regarding
cash discounts and will be communicating with them on this issue in due course.
As a ‘logistics service provider’ for Pfizer, UniChem plays no part in this
process.
5. How easy is it for non-UniChem customers to set up an account?
-
For those customers who have not traded with UniChem before, or who will be
trading with us again from March 2007, we have made the account sign-up process
as quick, simple and pain-free as possible. We will shortly be sending out a
full information pack to all new customers to explain exactly what action is
required, but rest-assured that we will do everything in our power to ensure
that this is a smooth (and hassle-free) process. We do not intend to
over-burden busy pharmacists with additional paperwork.
6. Will this have a detrimental affect upon the service to existing UniChem
customers?
-
Absolutely not. The investment plans we have in place will ensure that there is
no disruption for existing UniChem customers. Maintaining excellent service for
all customers is our number one priority.
