Reflections and First Impressions: David Coles and
Terry Scicluna
In his final address to delegates, outgoing Managing Director
of UniChem, David Coles, reflected on the changes that he has witnessed in
pharmacy during his time with the business. He told delegates that in the past
four years “change has been real, it has been significant and it is
accelerating”.
David indicated that the big drivers of change are intensifying and commented
“As the Government struggles with increasing health costs it is constantly
seeking new, more efficient models. Of course this creates challenges but the
most important point in the big picture is that pharmacy is not seen as part of
the problem but as a major component of the solution ... I see a definite shift
in Pharmacy; from the trading retailers of some years ago, to the Healthcare
Practitioners of today.”
He concluded by thanking delegates for their support and commitment to UniChem
before introducing new Managing Director Terry Scicluna.
In his introductory speech to delegates, Terry Scicluna, new Managing Director
of UniChem, presented his vision for the business and indicated his desire to
maintain and grow UniChem’s industry-leading and added value support for its
independent customers. Commenting on his previous role as Chief Operating
Officer for Alliance Pharmacy, Terry said: “Like you, I understand just how
much a smooth pharmacy operation relies on a reliable service from its
wholesaler … and as pharmacists you need that assurance to enable you to focus
on delivering healthcare”
Terry continued by expressing his passion for and understanding of Community
Pharmacy commenting: “As you know there are major shifts in the UK, as primary
care becomes more unaffordable and the role of the pharmacist becomes
increasingly important. Pharmacy customers…are looking for expert advice and
service. There is no doubt that this presents a huge opportunity for pharmacy.”
He concluded by pledging to delegates that “The interests of UniChem’s customers
will remain at the heart of everything we do, we will continue to evolve in
order to support you in a changing world.”
